HISTORY

The Huichol is a culture originated in the mountains of central Mexico and have lived there for more than 1000 years. They are one of the few groups that did not accept Spanish impositions.

RELIGION

Central to their religion is the gathering of Peyote, an hallucinogenic plant which helps to contact with ancestor spirits. They pilgrimage yearly to hunt Peyote. They eat enough to interact with the souls that have returned to the world as rock crystals.

ART

They did not have a written language, their symbols have been the primary form of preserving art. The most common motifs are related to the elements in their religion: the deer, corn, fire (source of food) and peyote, an hallucinogenic which gives shamans visions.

RESISTENCE

It has got harder for Huichols to find their sacred plant and they have needed official intervention to protect their trail. If peyote disappears, their culture disappears. Currently, one of their sacred mountains for their ceremonial Peyote hunt is being purchased for a Canadian mining company.
